This coming Sunday we are talking about power. We don’t often think of empowerment as a virtue of Christ because we think so often of Christ’s humility. But what empowered Jesus to stand up to oppressors, to speak up for outsiders and ultimately, what empowered Jesus to go to the cross?
Think about the power you have. Where does it come from? Have there been times in your life when you have felt more powerful? When have you had to rely on someone else’s power to carry you? Who was it? Is it still going on or have you stepped in to more power?
If there was a scale of power from 1 meaning little or no power to 10 meaning ultimate power. Where would you put yourself? In what areas of life (home, school, work, family, etc.) do you have more or less power? How much power do you have at church? How much power do you think God would like you to have at church?
How do your ethnicity and sex relate to the power you have in a given place? How does wealth relate? Language? Education? Health? Age? Looks? What else affects your power?
Power is worth thinking about and praying about. In a book by Dominique Gilliard, we read how the gospel calls us to leverage the power we have towards those who have less. How can we give power away and still be empowered?
I love you, Lord; you are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. -Psalm 18:1-2
Feel free to write back to me in an email at [email protected]. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Blessings for praying and pondering…
